On Thursday, 13 November, police carried out a covert operation in Epsom Town focusing on tackling anti-social behaviour, including use of motorbikes and retail crime. This resulted in four arrests on the day. Less than one week on, here's an update: Two individuals have been released on bail pending further investigation. Theresa Smith, 47 (DOB: 28/05/78), of no fixed address, was charged with theft from a shop to the value of £169.50. She was remanded in custody and appeared at Guildford Magistrates’ Court the following day, where she pleaded guilty and received a fine of £140, deemed served due to time already spent in custody. Stanley Newell, 19 (DOB: 12/03/06), of Burnhams Grove, Epsom, was apprehended by Police Constable James Delaney from the Epsom Neighbourhood team. Newell was observed riding a motorbike without a registration plate on Station Approach. When he attempted to flee, the officer single-handedly restrained him and Newell was arrested. The motorbike was later confirmed as stolen from London. Newell was charged and remanded for multiple offences, including: Driving while disqualified Driving without insurance Taking a conveyance without consent Newell remained in custody over the weekend and pleaded guilty to all three offences. He appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Monday (17 November), where he was sentenced to 14 weeks’ imprisonment and had his driving disqualification extended to 813 days. This is on top of being recalled to prison as he was on licence. Sergeant Adam Staplehurst of the Epsom Safer Neighbourhood Team stated: “This is the second time in as many months that local officers have put themselves in harm’s way to restrain someone from a moving motorbike. It demonstrates their dedication to protecting the public and tackling the anti-social use of motorbikes in the Borough. I would also like to extend my thanks to the member of the public who assisted the officer in detaining Newell—you are a credit to society.” | ||
